Which inks fade fastest
Blue and red felt-tip dyes are the most fugitive and can noticeably weaken within a few years in a bright room. Black pigment markers and blue ballpoint are considerably more stable. Silver and gold pens on dark surfaces sit on the surface and are prone to flaking as well as fading.
Light is the main enemy
Never hang signed items in direct sunlight, and be wary of south-facing rooms and conservatories where both light and heat are extreme. Halogen spotlights aimed at a frame generate localised heat; LED lighting at a distance is far safer.
Heat and humidity
Avoid hanging above radiators, open fires or on external walls prone to condensation. Aim for a stable room rather than a perfect one — repeated swings between damp and dry cause cockling and foxing faster than a consistently imperfect environment.
Rotation
Serious collectors rotate display pieces, keeping the most fragile items boxed for part of the year. Halving display time roughly doubles the life of a vulnerable signature.
